Newly opened Antebellum Gallery to curate exhibitions by out-of-the-ordinary
artists, host salons and multimedia performances, adds artistic provocation to the new Hollywood. Specializing in fringe, fetish, and erotic art, Antebellum to feature artists and work that ranges from traditional to the outrageous. Antebellum will host original curated exhibits, new artists, film screenings, tea salons, readings, forums, and performances. The first public exhibit, titled EROTIC PIONEERS: PAST & PRESENT is scheduled to run from November 11,through February 3 2006. OPENING RECEPTION 7-10PM, FRIDAY NOVEMBER 11, 2005. EROTIC PIONEERS: PAST & PRESENT features many well known names in gay erotica such as Tom of Finland, Mel Roberts, Bob Mizer, and others along with exciting contemporary artists including Beau, Peter Berlin, Harry Bush, John Blackburn, Rick Castro, Reed Massengill, Miguel Angel Reyes,Tony Ward, and many others. Steeped in Victorian nuancesall art is hung on cords, salon styleAntebellum is intended as a casual space for art The term “antebellum” literally means “before war” and while it commonly refers to a more romantic era, Antebellum Gallery is intended as a hybrid of artistic, cultural, and political iconoclasm. Other upcoming events include a fetish tea-party, and Fluxion #4 release party and exhibit. Located at 1643 North Las Palmas Avenue, in the heart of downtown Hollywood.
Antebellum is owned and operated by Rick Castro and Mark Harvey. RICK CASTRO is an independent filmmaker and photographer. Castro’s work explores the world of fetish and fringes of sex culture. His work has been published in artist editions, exhibitions and institutions worldwide. Rick co-directed and wrote Hustler White and the documentary Plushies & Furries for MTV. Castro’s photography is in the permanent collections of The Alfred Kinsey Institute and The Tom of Finland Foundation. His books and zines are archived at the UCLA library, and The Leather Museum in Chicago. Castro has photographed portraits of the Dalai Lama, (sipping tea) Gore Vidal, Peter Berlin, Alan Poul (producer of Six Feet Under) and his longtime muse, Tony Ward. MARK HARVEY is a multimedia artist, graphic designer, and photographer. Harvey is the editor/creator of his own infrequently published art and culture Harvey, originally from Richmond, VA., studied Design and Film at Virginia Commonwealth University and received an MFA in photography from the
