Dia De Los Muertos (Day of
The Dead) is a traditional Mexican holiday which celebrates and honors
the dead through colorful expression in art, costumes, music, food,
dance & drink ...an important annual event culminating in "una fiesta en
el cematario" (a party in the cemetery).
Among the cultures of
Mexico - where the tradition originated - this observance has ancient
Aztec and Mesoamerican roots and is a national holiday. The Day of the
Dead is also celebrated to a lesser extent in other Latin American
countries; for example, it is a public holiday in Brazil -where many
celebrate by visiting cemeteries and churches. This holiday is also
observed in the Philippines. Observance of this ancient tradition has
spread to Mexican-American communities in the United States as well.
Similarly themed celebrations also appear in some Asian and African
cultures.
Though the subject matter
may be considered morbid from the perspective of mainstream
Anglo-American culture, Latin celebrants typically approach the Day of
the Dead joyfully. Though this festival occurs at the same time as
Halloween, All Saints' Day, and All Souls Day the traditional mood is
much brighter in tone with an emphasis on celebrating and honoring the
lives of the deceased together with celebrating the continuation of life
in a different form or realm. The core belief is not that death is an
absolute end and personal extinction but that death instead marks the
beginning of a new stage of spiritual growth.
Curator RICK CASTRO will
present this first-ever art exhibit featuring erotic interpretations of
Dia De Los Muertos. Castro is reaching out beyond the Latino community,
inviting artists of all backgrounds, nationalities and faiths to share
their interpretations of this predominately Latin tradition.
It is Castro´s hope that
by presenting Dia De Los Muertos, one of the few Latin traditions not
completely veiled in religious dogma, and opening this tradition up to
all nationalities, faiths and sexual persuasions the exhibit will begin
to bridge gaps of alienation and fear regarding these mysterious core
aspects of life - sexuality and death - which some religions have
stigmatized, exploited, or viewed very differently for thousands of
years.
Life, sexuality, death,
and spirituality are all entwined in an erotic mutual embrace of
celebration at?Antebellum Gallery's "Dia De Los Muertos~Erotica"
exhibition. Please do join us!

RAYMOND SANDOVAL
lives in Jemez Springs, New Mexico, population 364.
Surrounded by the Santa Fe National Forest nestled in the
walls of San Diego canyon, Raymond has made his home where
his great grandfather settled. Sandovak says, I wanted to
see the stars at night and hear the crickets again.
Sandoval is a
graduate of the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts and
received numerous awards and commissions.
Sandoval's
artwork range from small bronzes to colossal Monuments.
Sandoval's most well known work is the colossal bronze of
TAMANEND in Philadelphia, Pa, located on Penn´s Landing
along the Delaware river. TAMANEND commemorates the
contributions of Native Americans Indians.
As an
artist, Sandoval uses the figure as language. The art
becomes the messenger. He is always learning. Sandoval says,
"my work is a result of working where there is seemingly
nothing, allowing myself to be irrational and emotional,
then with a measure of faith, I intuitively make an image.
What I find is that in some indirect way, I´ve dredged up a
peice of myself and put it on public view. Using traditional
icons with the idea that my forefathers came here to
homestead with the scared image in their memory, they
created a very simple and clean image of their patron saint
."
When
Sandoval was invited to be a part of Dia De Los Muertos ~
Erotica exhibit, he used that idea. Simple and clean using
traditional methods, with a twist. |

“HOLY HOMO COMICS, DUDE!!!” Antebellum is proud to present
TOONFETISH!, an exhibition of Gay erotic comic & illustrated art.
“KABOOM!!” Over the past 25 years, the medium of illustrative
storytelling has exploded far beyond the realm of “disposable
kiddie entertainment”. Whether mainstream or alternative, comics are
now a respected art form that features an endless array of
illustration styles and diverse subject matter including adult
fantasy, erotic & fetish themes.
“THANKS, DADDY!” 40 years after pioneer Tom of Finland blazed the
trail with his “dirty drawings”, a whole new generation of artists
carry gay erotic illustration into the new millennium. These artists
who could, and in many cases do, work in the mainstream, have chosen
to use their formidable talents to create images and stories that
express themselves erotically. Unabashed, unapologetic and
definitely “UN-PC”, they're putting their imaginations on paper
for all to enjoy. From single image pinups, to fantasy and science
fiction adventures to everyday erotic tales.
“2D FANTASY FUEL!” Gay erotic comics not only reflect existing
fetishes and types in real life, but now influence and add to the
gallery of arousing archetypes. Sexy Manga Boys, Nasty Skatepunks,
Slutty Spacestuds, Superhung Superheroes and “curiously hot”
Otherworldly Creatures have seeped into the fantasies of many a comic
reader. “Toons” have now become a fetish unto themselves.
“THIS IS A JOB FOR… ”As creator of “G-MAN” and “CHELSEA
BOYS” books, internationally renown artist Glen Hanson leads the
pack in this field. Together with legendary fetish and fashion
photographer Rick Castro, they have put together TOONFETISH!,
a show
that will feature some of the hottest artists working in this field
today including-
Drubskin, from San Diego, CA, Dronio, from Bologna, Italy,
Justin
Hall, from San Francisco, CA, Zart from Athens, Greece,
Savieri, from
Melbourne, Australia, Patrick Fillion from Vancouver, Canada and
many
more!
“SPURT!!” TOONFETISH! explodes in Hollywood at the ANTEBELLUM
GALLERY opening nite reception- June 8th! the exhibit runs through
July, 13th, 2007 with kickass drawing salons and events throughout
the show's run lead by the artists themselves!

DRUBSKIN
lives in San Diego, CA.
drubslkin creates proto-pornography for the punk and skateboard
generation: Drub's images of a new queer archetype with a subversive
comic book style are colorful manifestos of youthful lust. Mixing
traditional fine art techniques with today's technology, Drub's
artwork perverts the mind and the medium. Drub's distinctive images

ZART
Born in Greece in 1976 and grew
up in a small seaside town.
Since he can remember, Zart has been drawing on every blank space of
his school books. Men, women, ambiguous creatures, clothes, gestures,
expressions....
In 1996 Zart entered the Accademy of Fine Arts of Rome , Italy where
he studied for two years.then dropped out as his tuttors were telling
him,“you’re not a painter, but a graphic artist...(!)” Zart then
moved to London where he got accepted at Saint Martins College of Art
and Design. Zart completed a BA hons course in Graphic Design with
specialisation in Illustration, Then spent 2 years working for
various Design Studios, but military duty in Greece was impossible to
avoid....So Zart returned to Greece in 2003, worked for OZON magazine
for 6 months and then spent a year and a half of his life training in
the Greek Air Force (a real opportunity to explore the human
behaviour, especially the disturbed one).
In 2004 Zart got hired from CREAM advertising company, where he works
as a Senior Art Director.
Zart has never abbandoned his love for drawing and throughout the
years his style has developed into a mixture of spontaneous scetches
and his experience in Design.
Currently Zart is working on a series of drawings entitled:
“Documentations of Complicated Lives”.

SAVIERI
is an artist and writer living in
Melbourne, Australia.
Savieri grew up in a little backwater town where
his nightmares flourished in a cultural desert. At 17
Savieri plucked them from the barren soil and hoisted his
demons towards his dreams. Salieri has since lived and
worked in Sydney, Paris and New York, but still calls Melbourne his
home.
Savieri is influenced by the many things he never planned on
becoming, Savieri has made dubious use of his ample
talents... Or is it the other way around?

DRONIO, (Jacopo Camagni )
was born in Bologna, Italy, on December 21, 1977.
After studying classical art, graphic design and photography at Liceo
Artistico F. Arcangeli, Dronio began his career in 1998 with the gay
comic series "Take Away" and the strip "Le Amiche Giuste" (exhibited
in the Triennale of Milano) published by Kappa Edizioni. Dronio’s
boldly inked and energetically colored illustrations have been used
for advertising around the world, in magazines, on covers for video
games, and even in a book for the Opera House of Rome.
In 2005, Dronio developed his "True" series, a lush collection of
illustrations that reinterpreted some of the most famous characters
from fairy tales, fantasy literature as well as contemporary real
life, with his own sexy and slightly alternative homoerotic point of
view.
Dronio and his boyfriend, writer/designer Marco Felicioni, co-created
and published the first volume of "Magna Veritas", a graphic novel
series for Soleil Edition of Toulon, France in 2006. The 2nd issue
of "Magna Veritas" is due out later this year.
Currently, Dronio is working on a variety of projects including
illustrations for “Graveside”, a "dark toned" mini-series for
Image Comics.

PATRICK FILLION
lives in Vancouver, Canada.
Patrick has been an artist since birth, preferring pencil and paper
to most other toys as a child, he would draw for hours on end. As an
adult, Patrick's love of art and comics in particular is stronger
than ever.
Recently Unzipped magazine stated, "It's not hard to see why
Fillion's comics have caught on so well in the gay community. From
the lasciviously sketched studs in tights to the intensely graphic
depiction of sexual intercourse, Fillion's books are like X-Rated
versions of the superhero books he and many of us grew up idolizing."
Putting as much care and love into developing the characters and the
stories as he does into drawing them, Patrick redefines how we look
at adult comics. Produced with the highest standards possible, each
comic book is created with absolute devotion to quality and attention
to detail.
A leader in the field, Patrick's art continues to inspire and
impress. His men are exquisite and memorable. His comics are bold
and cutting edge. One thing is certain. Patrick is an artist of
great influence and like Tom of Finland before him, his amazing
artwork will continue to pave the way for other artists.
Patrick has created 3 art books, Heroes, Hot Chocolate and Mighty
Males, all of which have been published with great success by Bruno
Gmunder. When Patrick is not busy writing, drawing and publishing
comics, he is hard at work illustrating for several well known gay
publications, such as Black Inches, Latin Inches, Torso, Inches and
recently Freshmen magazines.
Today, Patrick and his life and business partner, Fraz have created
their own independent publishing company called Class Comics.
Through this company, they produce and print several Gay Erotic theme
comics such as Naked Justice, Camili-Cat (whom Patrick created 20
years ago, at the age of 12), Satisfaction Guaranteed, Guardians of
the Cube, Deimos, and the anthology series called Rapture.
In 2007, a fourth art book entitled Bliss: The Art of Patrick Fillion
will be released by the German Publishers. This fourth book, a more
personal look at Patrick's work, promises to be his most exciting so
far, with nearly 100 pages of his signature studs bursting to life
for our viewing pleasures.

about the gallery
Antebellum Gallery is Located at 1643 North Las Palmas Avenue, in the
heart of downtown Hollywood. The term antebellum is latin for,
“before war” and while it commonly refers to a more romantic Gone
With the Wind era, we find ourselves again today with American
culture at odds with political/religious/social agendas that threaten
to blow the lid off its foundations at any given moment.
Steeped in Victorian nuances with a salon style, Antebellum is a
casual space for art and engaging conversation. Antebellum Gallery is
intended as a hybrid of artistic, cultural, and political iconoclasm.

fringes of sex culture. His work has been published in artist editions,
exhibitions and institutions worldwide. Rick co-directed and wrote Hustler White
and the documentary Plushies & Furries for MTV.
Castros photography is in the
permanent collections of The Alfred Kinsey Institute and The Tom of Finland

Leather Museum in Chicago. Castro has photographed portraits of the Dalai Lama,
(sipping tea) Gore Vidal, Peter Berlin, Alan Poul (producer of Six Feet Under)
and his longtime muse, Tony Ward. Castro owns and runs ANTEBELLUM GALLERY.
Antebellum Gallery is Located at
1643 North Las Palmas Avenue, in the heart of downtown Hollywood. The term
antebellum is latin for before war and while it commonly refers to a more
romantic Gone With the Wind era, we find ourselves again today with American
culture at odds with political/religious/social agendas that threaten to blow
the lid off its foundations at any given moment.
Steeped in Victorian nuances with
a salon style, Antebellum is a casual space for art and engaging salon
conversation. Antebellum Gallery is intended as a hybrid of artistic, cultural,
and political iconoclasm.

SEAN
PLATTER considers himself a victorian in a digital world.
Seans
fascination with ornament and past design forms can be traced back to the grand
victorian homes of his youth. The overabundance of detail and sense of fantasy
appealed to Sean like nothing else. Over time, this fascination lead to an
appreciation for outlandish excess, the exotic , the erotic, and all things
macabre.
Sean
received a degree in graphic design at a midwestern collage and moved to Los
Angeles in 1984. He has had many interesting jobs including manually pasting
phone numbers in the local phone book, advertising for gay papers and
illustrations for In Touch and Indulge for every month from 1984 thru 2005. Sean
was also an animator at Filmation studios working on He-man and She-Ra. Sean
continues to work as a professional animator.
Sean
lists his influences as- Harry Bush, Simon Bisley, The Symbolists, The
Orientalists. Hindu devotional art from India, Byzantine art and Medieval
illuminated manuscripts.
Sean is
the creator of a twisted graphic novel called DEMONICSEX: satanic tales of
transformation and possession. The second volume will be released on All Hallows
Eve at Antebellum gallery!

TONY
LEWD LABADIE says It all started with strange dreams of lizard-men and alien
atmospheres.
Lewd,
says he has always had a passion for art in every form, be it Film, books,
comics, photography, architecture, culture, even food has inspired and given
Lewd motivation to create.
Character
illustration and the male body have been the primary focus of lewds art and
experimentation. Lewd sees the male body as a frame of power and lust, hard,
feral, and arousing, causes him to bring forth wildly exotic fantasy that hes
dreamt. Lewd says, this gives my characters bizarre, or monstrous
characteristics and stimulates more mystery and curiosity, making
experimentation with sex much more fulfilling and enjoyable.
Monsters,
demons, aliens, and other famous creatures such as the Predator reveal their
erotic potential and become objects of lust & desire are depicted in Lewds
artwork.

DON
SABAN is a native of Phoenix ,AZ, he received his formal training at Brooks
Institute of Photography, Santa Barbara, and was simultaneously a prote of
professor William A. Rohrbach, University of California Santa Barbara, who
studied with classic photographer Minor White at Berkley in the 1950´s.
Sabin has
been a member of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art Photography Committee. During
his tenure in Santa Barbara, he was one of the first photographers to be in Art
Life magazine, and also on the cover.
After
moving to Los Angeles, Saban taught at Otis/Parsons and continued his
photographic work which has been published in numerous magazines.
Don Saban
was commissioned by the Santa Barbara Museum of Art to do photography for the
book : Standing in the Tempest: Painters of the Hungarian Avant-Garde.
Sabans
current work is experimentation with digital images working with color and
design that at once becomes spiritual, celestial and mythical.
Don Saban
says, I've always wanted to do more with photography than what was possible when
I first started out. With the advent of digital cameras and new technology I can
now realize what I've always dreamt of doing This new body of work embraces the
old with the new, starting with an image made by a digital camera (which still
uses a glass lens, shutter and f/stops like a traditional camera) and
traditional studio lights.
In
essence the image becomes somewhat of a blank canvas for me to explore the
possibilities. The digital lab has replaced the limitations of the darkroom,
allowing me to accomplish my artistic vision and goals. Ultimately images are
wonderful to look at, and what one takes away from them is up to the individual.

PAMELA
JOSEPH says her work often starts with separate parts that come together
over time to make a complete statement.
Pamela
has a long-standing interest in women and their place in contemporary society,
their power or lack of it, and their relationship to the world around them. Over
the past few years, Pamela's work has also explored different religious issues,
especially the Madonna. The Virgin Mary has been an intense attraction for
Pamela, who was raised as a Catholic. The Virgin was the ultimate symbol of
feminine perfection.
Pamela
bought the kneeler about three years ago, drawn to its textures and sense of
history. At the time she had no idea how it would manifest in an artwork.
Pamela
then painted the Pussy Madonna image in 2003 while she was a Visiting Artist at
the American Academy in Rome. It was there that Pamela became especially aware
of the sympathetic juxtaposition of the sacred and the profane: erotic scrims on
buildings would be backdrops for provocative Bernini sculptures, or a Virgin
Shrine enclosed in neon would be next to a suggestive movie poster.
Pussy
Marshmallow is Pamela's alter ego, a woman who audaciously dares to break the
rules in the game of the sexes. Here she is reborn as the Savior Christ child,
resting in the arms of the Virgin Mary while winged fairies soar and the
putanesca burns in hell.
Pamela
has worked with KUROSH VALANEJAD on a wide range of projects from 1992.
Kurosh suggested turning the Pussy painting into a 3-D stereoscopic light
projection and executed the separation of layers and designed the light box.
Pamela and Kurosh then engage in dialogue to further develop the piece.
The
intricate mirror box was fabricated based on similar historic contraptions.
Pamela's has been fascinated with the idea of the phrase They did it with
mirrors, the conflict and the indecision of what is real or merely illusion.
The
Kneeler becomes a complete environment with the addition of the text, which is
based on Pamela's personal experiences and memories. The words are a dialogue
between the supposedly different personas of the Madonna and the whore in a
conversation with a paternal figure. Sound artist Liliana Mejia took my words
and wove them into a complex overlay of voices, much like a supportive Greek
chorus. She has composed a score that interacts with other elements such as fire,
wings and music. The refusal to be judged now extends into the collective realm
and is not just an individual effort.
The image
of kneeling is one of surrendering pride and admitting ones sins. Instead, this
humbling act becomes a defiant stance in the face of rigid and perfectionist
views.

ERIC OCTOBER was born and raised in the Central Valley and then
transplanted to Southern California.
After
receiving a BA in Fine Art at UCLA he has pursued various media to express his
artistic ideas, including drawing, painting, sculpture, photography, and mixed
media/assemblage.
Reoccurring themes in his work include examining the ways the male body is
represented and specifically how the male body is presented to gay men.
Currently,
in addition to painting, Eric is focusing on animation as his next artistic
frontier to explore.

H.R. GIGER was born in the small city of
Chur, Switzerland in February, 1940. Giger grew up in a rather normal, middle
class family environment. His father was the local pharmacist. When he was quite
young his father received a human skull as a professional promotion from a
pharmaceutical firm, and the young Hansruedi was taken spellbound.
After high school (gymnasium) Giger went on to
study architecture and industrial design at Zurich's School of Applied Arts. He
soon expanded his network of friends to include those in involved in various
aspects of the arts, and began drawing creatively.
In 1966 Giger began work as an interior designer,
and at the same time, completed some early paintings. In 1968 Giger began
working exclusively as an artist, as well as filmmaker. Giger has his first
posters published in 1969 and also has some of his first exhibitions outside of
Zurich.
Giger begins using the airbrush in the next
decade, and his works take on a unique otherworldly quality. He grows to be
considered the leading airbrush artist in the world and proved that fine art
could be produced via the device. Working in large formats, Giger's paintings
are meticulously rendered and possess a blend of erotic mystery and alien
elegance.
In 1978 Giger began work on the film ALIEN, and
ended up sculpting much of the creatures and sets. In 1980 the artist is awarded
an Oscar for his stunning work on the classic film.
Giger began work on The H.R. Giger Museum in the
middle 1990s and this continues today, as the medieval castle in Gruyere,
Switzerland is being continually expanded. The museum houses Giger's personal
collection of art from around the world, as well as a substantial collection of
his own paintings and sculptural work.

and following both consumer and retailled him to the attention of a group of
Italian manufacturers, with whom he is now partners in his ever-growing company
OwensCorp. Rick designs his own clothing lines called Rick Owens, DKSHWDS and
Lilies. Owens is also Artistic Director for Revillon, the French fur brand

On April
7th, 2006, we lost an icon and part of our history. John
Blackburn passed away at 8.35pm due to complications from treatment
for colon cancer. He was 67.
Born on September 10th, 1939, John grew up
in rural Statesboro,
Georgia, attended Georgia State College, then transferred to art
school in Nashville, Tennessee during the 1950's.
John's first art exhibit was in 1960 in Statesboro, GA. Delighted
and encouraged when the local chamber of commerce invited him to
display his landscapes, John was so excited he decided to create new
paintings including nude men in the scenery. Nobody thought about
checking to see what the budding young artist was planing on
presenting until the actual opening. Thus, as the exhibit opened at
the public library John innocently exhibited the first homoerotic art
exhibit in Statesboro and possibly the South.
Sometime around 1962 John moved to Los Angeles and never looked
back. He immediately immersed himself in the burgeoning gay
community. John's artwork was on the cover of ONE Magazine. Founded
by Harry Hay, Jim Kempner, Morris Knight and designer Rudy Gernriech,
One was the first gay periodical of its day. John's art was soon
featured in Physique Pictorial, the magazine created by Bob Mizer of
AMG Studios.
During the late 70's John created the infamous character of Coley, a
bisexual hedonist whose sexual pleasures were vast and indulged
often. For this character John incorporated his own experiences and
memories of what it was like being a young gay blade in the south
during the 60's & 70's. John also created artwork for the Meatmen
comic series, including a cover for issue #21.
During 1977 John had two milestones in his life. He opened
FrameMakers in Westwood, CA, where he designed and built custom
frames. He also met the love of his life, Jimmy Kawakami.
John was a close friend of Ted Shawn, a prominent New York dancer and
founder of the Denishawn dance company. John painted numerous
portraits of Ted and the company, using the images of dancers as
prototypes for his artwork. John Blackburn loved art, spending hours--
sometimes entire days--painting in his studio. John worked with all
mediums: oil, acrylic, pastel, watercolor, pen&ink, pencil and block
prints. John liked nothing better than creating art, surrounded by
his birds, with whom he also had a strong affinity.
"John definitely had a Zen philosophy,"
says his life partner Jimmy,
"he was very kind and had a non-judgmental approach to everyone, and
everything. He believed that all in this world was of equal value. He
didn't place people above other living creatures. John did had bad
memories of the religious dogma from the area he grew up, but in
recent years was thinking of moving back. He longed for a slower
pace. LA was getting to him. We both were seeking a quieter life."
John Blackburn is survived by his sisters Billie and Frances, his
three birds Camille, Simone and Carmen, and his true love Jimmy
Kawakami. John Blackburn will be loved and missed by the people who
knew him and had the pleasure of experiencing the art, spirit and
kindness of this true southern gentleman.
Antebellum Gallery will present a memento mori honoring the life and
art of John Blackburn on July 17th, 7pm. Work from the collection of
John Blackburn from 1958- 2006 will be on display. This is a one
evening event only. The public is invited.
